I have always been self-conscious about my face, whether it be my forehead, my nose or just my oily skin in general. I have always worn very minimal makeup and I still do, but I’ve been stepping out of my comfort zone with eyeshadows and eyeliner. I do enjoy doing fancy makeup looks, but I always take it off not too long after because I can never convince myself to wear a bold look to school or even out in public. So recently I decided to try something new and do winged eyeliner some days and gold eyeshadow the next, a more bold look for me and the result: I have been loving it. I still have days where mascara, blush and brows are all I have on my face, but I feel better about myself after the experimentation no matter the amount of makeup on my face.
My forehead: to me, it’s big, it’s not proportional with the rest of my face; an eye sore. It’s not really that bad I’m sure, but to me, it makes me feel insecure. I decided to try something that I haven’t done since I was about 8 years old: I got bangs. The result: I LOVE it. Bangs are fun because they add a little something to every hairstyle. It’s one of the happiest decisions I have ever made when it comes to cutting my hair (and believe me I’ve made quite a few unhappy decisions when it comes to my hair). I have gone really short, I have done the whole layers thing (short in the front, long in the back and vice versa) and I have had it grown out past my shoulders. I like the chopped shoulder length look I have now with bangs, even though I’m trying to grow it out again. I want to be able to put it in a bun because I miss my go-to up-do. It’s simple, easy and comfortable like the rest of my preferred look and styling it with my bangs will be something new.
Overall, the whole experience of trying out new looks has been working out for me. It’s been an eye-opening experience. I’ve learned that as long as I feel good about what I’m wearing, how my hair is done or the amount of makeup on my face, that is all that matters. Style is a reflection of you and if you wear what makes you happy, you’re doing it right. I’ve been finding what I like and what makes me feel good about myself. This has been a thrilling experience that has only just begun, because the great thing about style is that it can change. Why? Because nobody stays the exact same forever, so why should what I wear stick to the same pattern? Mix it up. Try on those new jeans, wear that hat, get those new spunky frames. Because if you don’t like it you can always decide to take it off, but if you never try it on, you won’t ever get to make that decision.
