How I (Attempt to) Balance Blogging & High School

How I (Attempt to) Balance Blogging & High School

Welcome to My Office!

This comfy spot right here on my bed is where most of my blog things happen. We save homework for the kitchen table or my desk when it isn’t covered in piles of college advertisements and receipts.

Here is where I write blog posts, take my flatlays, other pictures like this one, plan out what is next to come in my planner, and jot down ideas or poems in my notebook. So technically, this is where it all happens.

I guess this spot being my office kind of helps me balance. Most of the time I’m up ridiculously late working on procrastinated homework, but some nights I find that inspiration strikes and so I get out my laptop and begin working on a new post for whatever concept has suddenly popped in my head before I go to sleep.

I have so many things I want to write about. There is an endless number of things I want to share and explain, but all these ideas usually come to me in one sitting, with not nearly enough time to complete them all. So this is how I have so many drafts in the works.

Currently, I have 45 drafts. 45 posts, or starts of posts, some of which I eventually want to finish and publish. Some of them I might never finish because I just don’t feel like they really work for what I want this blog to be anymore, but most of them I probably will.

Who knows, I might even be able to save the drafts I’m not sure I want to publish and turn them into something new, something that fits who I am now. Only time will tell.

All I can say is: It’s not easy. The desire to be creative and to do the things I can to push myself toward whatever future it is that I want while also being given busy work at school about things I really don’t care about all that much

is hard.

I know the things I learn about in school are important, at least for me to further my education in college. Because y’all know that blogging doesn’t require precalc or chemistry otherwise ya girl wouldn’t be here.

I really enjoy this. I love having this platform to talk about things I’m passionate about and sometimes I find new things I’m passionate about in history, psychology or english class, which then reminds me why I kind of do enjoy school. Because then I can talk about those new things that interest me here: This place that is like a diary that everyone can read and has the possibility to learn from.

On this blog, I want to continue my advocacy for people with disabilities and to share more about Emily, push myself to create more fashion-related content, dabble in digital art and other art forms, and continue to candidly share more about my personal life, interests, and experiences.

I will continue to do this, but it is extremely hard sometimes. I don’t always feel like I have the time, and when I do, I lack the motivation it takes to get stuff done because I am exhausted.

I slept in for the first time in months this week. The first day I slept until 11:30, the second until about noon. I typically hate sleeping in anymore because I always feel groggy and like I can never really wake up. So then I waste the rest of my day lazing about doing nothing, maybe even sleeping more.

It was Winter Break back in December, that was the last time I really slept in. I have been working every weekend since then, and obviously, school just has to start at 7:35 every morning so I don’t have the opportunity to sleep in then either. It just hasn’t happened for me.

Which is okay, I don’t mind, but I didn’t realize how tired I was. Those two days I slept in this week didn’t affect me like they normally do. I felt refreshed and was more awake. I know you can’t ever catch up on sleep, but those two days of sleeping in told me exactly how sleep deprived I was because I could tell my body really needed it.

So I guess you could also say I’m juggling sleep too.

But so goes the creative lifestyle, right? Living the creative dream, choosing writing over sleep, photography over time management, and choosing to embrace new literature whenever possible instead of getting caught up on that psychology project that is due next week, all while trying to make it out of high school alive and with a diploma in hand.

It is without a doubt a struggle, but a struggle I don’t mind continuing. Things will eventually get easier as I become more experienced, and I will hopefully have less schoolwork (if I’m very lucky).

So in conclusion, it is possible to balance high school and blogging, but there are probably a lot of people out there doing it a whole lot better than I am, but I promise I’m going to make it, somehow.

Life Lately #3

Life Lately #3

Hello hello! It has been a good long while since I sat down and just let you know what’s going on in life with me. I have a thousand thoughts whirling through my head so I thought why not share them with you all?

First of all, I’d like to say hopefully when summer rolls around there will be more of a regular posting schedule here, it has just been hard lately. I’ve been busy with school, trying not to fall behind, and I’ve been picking up a lot more hours at work.

Which is fine because then I have the money to do things like buying myself a DSLR camera! Okay well, mom may have actually helped me out with this because college and a car are still the main priorities for my savings account at the moment and the need to pay for those is a lot closer than I’m thinking, but I am still shocked that I could even say “Let’s go 50/50 on a DSLR camera.”

I had a really rough weekend a couple weeks back, and my mom knew I had been wanting to get this camera for such a long time. I was not feeling my best, which is actually a severe understatement, and my mom wanted to do something to try and make me feel better, so she said: “Let’s get your camera.” I was super surprised and I am super grateful that my mom wanted to help me get something to help me improve the content on this blog that I love so much. Thanks, Mama!

I’m hoping that with having a new camera might motivate me to take better photos. I have felt really uninspired lately. I will go days without taking a single photo or writing down a single word for a blog post, then all of a sudden I get hit with a burst of ideas, so many ideas, how to make them happen, and a huge drive to get them done. It’ll last maybe an hour or a little more, then I fall right back into a pit of uninspired despair.

I’m so ready to work myself out of this funk, but right now, I’m not sure how. So until then, hang in there with me people, I’ll get there. Hopefully sooner than later.

I’m still pushing through trying to work on a few more posts. This week I took photos with my mom for my first Instagram collaboration, and a blog post I have hopefully coming out later this week, as long as it doesn’t snow here in Indy… I can’t believe I even have to say that, especially now that it’s April.

I mentioned that Instagram collaboration (Which is super crazy, if you ask me), but speaking of Instagram, I’ve been super happy with the growth I’m seeing. I was stuck at 150-160 followers for several months and then all of a sudden I sped past to get to 200 followers, and it is still growing!

I’m really proud of my content right now, and I’m hoping to start posting more consistently. So if you’d like to check out my Insta and maybe give me a follow, that would be amazing! You can find me @lookshecanblog. Thank you to those of you already following!

Something else I’ve done recently is learn a lot about friendship. I was sidelining some of my friends who really care about me to make time for people I had somehow categorized in my brain as more important, more worth my time. It’s heartbreaking to think that I felt that way, subconsciously or not. The people I was focusing on are great people and we made a lot of great memories together, but sometimes good people have sh*tty tendencies.

Friendships will go up and down, but the ones that recover are the ones that matter. I like to consider myself a forgiving person, but sometimes it’s hard. Sometimes there is something deep inside you that doesn’t want to forgive them.

Someday I hope to move past it, and hopefully maybe they can too, but for now, I’m going to focus on the people in my life who never stopped loving me and never stopped caring. And I’m going to take this time to really appreciate the friendships I have with those people.

On a more lighthearted note, I finally found a prom dress thanks to the lovely Maddy Corbin. She was looking to get rid of her dress from a couple years ago, and so she offered it to me. I’m in love with it, it makes me feel like a princess, and I’m now even more excited to dance the night away with my friends at prom. Thank you, Maddy!

**Also, should I do a post about prom? I have always wanted to do one but I’m not sure what I should do it about. Maybe a diary of my prom night? Please comment your thoughts below!

I had also mentioned in a previous post the possibility of me going to Spain next summer, and I can say now with absolute certainty, ya girl is going to Spain! I can’t even put into words how exciting this is for me. I’ve never been overseas, or on a plane in general, so that should be interesting, but I’m going with my favorite Spanish teachers, so that alone will make it a trip to remember.

There are so many exciting things to come in the future and I am beyond excited for when they do. I can’t wait to share them with you!

Be sure to check back here or turn my post notifications on so you don’t miss out on my next post!

20 Things That Make Me Happy

20 Things That Make Me Happy

Happy Saturday beautiful people! I feel like life has been going pretty okay at the moment, but even when things are going fine there can always be a few things that have the ability to get you down and allow yourself to think less positively.

Today I thought I would reflect and mention a few things I’m grateful for because they make me happy and it’s good to have a list to refer to when things aren’t going your way to remind you why life is so great. So without further ado, here are 20 things that make me happy.

  1. THIS. This is so important and I literally cannot stop smiling (and crying) when I read this. It’s a must-read.
  2. Dinosaurs! Not like the scary ones in Jurassic Park, but friendly looking dinosaurs. Like my adorable little planter over here on the right (Target it truly the best).

    Plants & Dinos
  3. Dunkin’ runs with my mama.
  4. The feeling you get when you walk into a bookstore or library (Which if you don’t read you won’t understand, but it’s amazing).
  5. Making my sister, Emily, laugh.
  6. Making my parents proud.
  7. When something goes right for my friends, whether it be something big or small, my heart is just so happy when things go right for them.
  8. Hugs when you need them most.
  9. Long conversations in a parked car.
  10. The smell of antique stores and the thrill of walking into a place filled with so many memories of the past.
  11. The excitement of listening to a record on vinyl for the first time, or better yet discovering a new favorite song on a new record.
  12. Writing things down on paper with my favorite pen. You may laugh, but I swear Y’all are really missing out if you don’t have a favorite pen because it’s a great little excitement when you have to write something down.
  13. Dance parties with Em! In the car, in the driveway, and in the kitchen! It’s the original dance party spot. You can occasionally join in one of our many dance parties on my Instagram story, so be sure to follow me!
  14. Reading comments and responses to posts I’ve written from you lovely people. It makes my day when I get feedback from you all! I love hearing from you!
  15. Thinking about the not-so-stressful parts about the future like traveling, college life, and how I hope my confidence, experience, blog, and social media presence, will have grown by then.
  16. Oversized sweaters and sweatshirts. If you think there is something comfier you are probably lying to yourself unless you went out and bought a snuggie or something. Sweatshirts are a socially acceptable blanket that you wear and keeps you warm, you feel me?
  17. Wearing an outfit that you love everything about and is the ideal image of “your style” and it makes you feel like a boss.
  18. Plants just plants being plants, taking artsy pictures of plants, being around plants . . . I think you get the idea.edcf141e-fa5b-4ffc-9c41-70cb20c0aacc
  19. When you flip to a channel that is just magically playing one your favorite shows (Which for me is Psych or Murder She Wrote).
  20. When you give someone a compliment and you can tell it really made a difference to their day.

I hope you might consider making your own list of 20 things that make you happy as it is actually psychologically proven that writing these things down has the ability to make you happier and less stressed.

So tell me, what is something that makes you happy and/or grateful to be here? Let’s start a positive conversation.

January Favorites

January Favorites

Although I’m sure most of you are astounded that January is finally coming to an end, I am confused as to why it isn’t May already. I feel that 2018 is off to a very slow start, but hey, at least we can say 1/12 of 2018 is done. Let’s not even think about how small that really is.

This month new obsessions were born with things I used/wore and I thought I would share a few of them with. So here we go…

App of the Month

Definitely, my favorite app of the month is Twitter. I’m not usually a huge Twitter user, but it is honestly one of the greatest places to casually connect with other people that you share common interests with (Let’s be Twitter friends @lookshecanblog!). I have connected with so many other bloggers this month just by participating in Twitter chats.

My favorite has to be the #GRLPOWR chats hosted by @GRLPOWRCHAT. They have a different blogger host the chats each time and it is such an amazing thing to be a part of.

Artsy Things

If you saw my last post, you know I’m really starting to get into bullet journaling, so of course, I had to mention it. I got my bullet journal on Amazon and I’ve been pinning ideas and inspiration on Pinterest all month so you can also take a look at that board here.

I’ve also been loving my Stabilo pens. These are the point 88 ones and I found this 25 pack on Amazon. They write so well and if you are into calligraphy or even just writing super tiny you would really like these too.

Speaking of calligraphy, I am definitely not an expert and mine don’t really look that great yet, but I’m getting into it.

Music of the Month

Album: Back From the Edge by James Arthur

I am fully aware this album has been out forever in the music world, but I just recently listened to the entire thing and WOW. He has such an emotional and powerful sound. I currently have it on repeat.

My favorite songs: “Back from the Edge”, “I Am”, “Safe Inside”, “Train Wreck”, “Skeletons”

Other songs I’ve been loving this month:

+ Perfect Duet by Ed Sheeran feat. Beyoncé

+ Dear World by Echosmith

+ El Perdón by Nicky Jam feat. Enrique Iglesias

+ Freedom by Dierks Bentley

Dorothy Parker Quotes

I had to do a project over the lovely Dorothy Parker for school and I fell in love with her wit.

Dorothy Parker: A Short Summary in Quotes

“His ignorance was an Empire State Building of ignorance. You had to admire it for its size.”

“I don’t have to attend every argument I’m invited to.”

“Youth, it was a way I had, to do my best to please. And change with every passing lad to suit his theories. But now I know the things I know and do the things I do, and so if you not like me so, to hell, my love, with you.”

“Women and elephants never forget.”

“I shall stay the way I am because I do not give a damn.”

“I prefer not to think before speaking. I like being just as surprised as everyone else by what comes out of my mouth.”

“That would be a good thing for them to cut on my tombstone: Wherever she went including here, it was against her better judgement.”

What a gal.

January Style Picks

I used to be so phone-case-crazy, but since I developed the fear of dropping my phone and shattering the screen, having a more protective case is more important to me and since those are little more pricey, it has since lead me to stop buying so many random phone cases (I was that girl who even had a Christmas phone case; actually think I had two… It was bad).

I have had this phone for almost a year now and have only had my black Otterbox phone case. Needless to say, I am shocked at this newfound self-control. So I decided after having the same phone case for this long to get myself a new one.

I found this beautiful eyelash case by Sonix at TJ Maxx for only $10 so I thought at that price it was too good to pass up.

If you have been keeping up with me on Instagram, @lookshecanblog, I have been living in this sweater I picked up at TJ Maxx. It’s a super cute gray sweater with these pink and blue flowers.

I feel like this sweater just gives off some super cool retro-vintage vibes. I am plant-obsessed and so I am in love with the earthy, but cute, vibes this sweater gives off.

I also haven’t seen a lot of sweaters around like this one. It’s definitely got that old style look to it, which just happens to be my favorite look.

I love how there are so many ways you can style sweaters. My favorite way to style this sweater is with mom jeans or a denim skirt with either boots or colorful shoes, like my pink Puma sneakers.

I will be sharing my recent beauty favorites later on this month, so keep an eye out for that.

What is something you were obsessed with in January?

My Goals for 2018

My Goals for 2018

Happy New Year! I can hardly believe 2017 has already come and gone. I honestly can’t say I remember who I was during this time last year only because I know she would be a complete stranger to me now. So who am I today? I am a 17-year-old girl, aspiring to be a lifestyle blogger, creative individual, and all around a better person who is hopeful for the future. Continue reading “My Goals for 2018”
